Leon Valley is an incorporated city in Bexar County, Texas, occupying roughly 3.4 square miles as an enclave within the northwest side of San Antonio. It sits in the San Antonio–New Braunfels metropolitan area, between the city's Loop 410 and Loop 1604 freeways, and is named for Leon Creek, which flows through the surrounding landscape. About 11,500 people live in the city. The community took shape in the 1950s as a suburban development on San Antonio's expanding northwest edge. Residents incorporated the city in 1952 specifically to prevent annexation by San Antonio, a decision that gave Leon Valley its own identity and municipal services. Today it operates under a council-manager government with its own police and fire departments and a public library, and the Leon Valley Historical Society preserves the area's story. Leon Valley's geography is defined by two busy commercial corridors: Bandera Road (State Highway 16) and Huebner Road, which cross near the city's center. Shopping centers, restaurants, and small businesses line these routes, while the residential streets behind them hold established, mid-century single-family neighborhoods. The Bandera Bowl bowling alley and Leon Creek Shopping Center are long-standing local institutions. Public education is provided by the Northside Independent School District, one of the largest districts in Texas, with Leon Valley Elementary School located in the city. Residents also draw on the jobs, healthcare, and amenities of the larger San Antonio region, including the South Texas Medical Center a short distance away.
