The town was settled in the 1840s and was known early on as Mudtown before taking the name Aquilla. By 1914 it had grown into a genuine farm-trade center, with a population above 500, thirteen retail stores, three hotels, four churches, a school, a newspaper, and a bank — an indication of how central agriculture and the crossroads economy were to the area's early life. The town is much smaller today, with a 2020 census population of 101.
