Village Mills is an unincorporated community in north central Hardin County, Texas, situated among the pine forests, bayous, and cypress sloughs of the East Texas Big Thicket region. It lies roughly 35 miles northwest of Beaumont along the U.S. Highway 69 and 287 corridor and falls within the Beaumont–Port Arthur metropolitan area, with the county seat of Kountze a short distance to the south. The community traces its roots to the early 1880s. The first town lots appeared in Hardin County tax rolls in 1882, and by 1883 the Village Mill Company was in operation, shipping lumber over the recently completed Sabine and East Texas Railroad. The sawmill drew workers and their families, and the settlement took its name from the mill that anchored its economy. As the timber boom eased and the railroad era shifted, Village Mills settled into the quieter, smaller community it remains today. Modern Village Mills is a spread-out, wooded settlement where homes sit on larger lots and acreage among pines and hardwoods. It offers a rural pace of life while keeping Beaumont, Port Arthur, and the Golden Triangle within commuting reach. The defining natural feature is the Big Thicket National Preserve, a nationally significant biological crossroads where southeastern forests, bottomlands, and wetlands meet; the preserve's visitor center sits just outside the community. Village Creek, which forms a roughly 37-mile paddling corridor between Village Mills and Silsbee, is a well-known route for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. The community suits people drawn to East Texas outdoors—birding, hiking, hunting, and river recreation—without the congestion of the coast. Daily needs are met in nearby Kountze, Silsbee, and Lumberton, while Beaumont provides larger employers, healthcare, and cultural amenities.
