Master-Planned North of Houston

Condos & Apartments in The Woodlands, TX

Welcome to The Woodlands, a forested master-planned community north of Houston built around villages, parks, and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.

The Woodlands is a master-planned community and special-purpose district in the Greater Houston area, located primarily in Montgomery County with portions extending into Harris County, about 30 miles north of downtown Houston. Founded by energy entrepreneur and philanthropist George Mitchell, the community opened on October 19, 1974, with a vision that departed sharply from conventional suburban development: rather than clear-cutting and building around highways, Mitchell sought to preserve the area's pine forest and connect villages through wooded streetscapes where residents could live, work, learn, and play. That founding vision remains the community's defining trait. The Woodlands is organized into nine villages, each with its own residential enclaves, village center, parks, and amenities. The first village, Grogan's Mill, dates to 1974, while the newest, Creekside Park, opened in 2007 and is the only village located in Harris County. Between them, communities such as Panther Creek, Cochran's Crossing, Indian Springs, Alden Bridge, Sterling Ridge, and College Park give the township its layered, village-based structure. The Woodlands Town Center forms the commercial and cultural heart, anchored by The Woodlands Mall, Market Street, the Waterway, and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, a major outdoor amphitheater for concerts and performing arts. More than 200 miles of hike-and-bike trails and over 130 parks thread through the community, along with the 1,700-acre George Mitchell Nature Preserve. Its roughly 115,000 residents live across the villages, and major employers, healthcare campuses, and retail hubs support a substantial local economy. Public schools are provided by three districts — Conroe ISD for most of the community, plus Tomball ISD and Magnolia ISD in certain areas. With its combination of forested neighborhoods, strong schools, corporate employers, and recreation, The Woodlands has become one of the Houston region's most distinctive master-planned communities.
