Somerset is a small incorporated city in southwestern Bexar County, Texas, about 15 miles southwest of downtown San Antonio and part of the San Antonio–New Braunfels metropolitan area. Its roots reach back to 1848, when Baptist families from Somerset, Kentucky, settled a few miles south of the present town; the name carried the community's frontier origins into the twentieth century, when the town organized around the railroad and later incorporated in 1973 under a mayor-council government. For generations, the local economy ran on farming, ranching, and oilfield work, with many residents also commuting to San Antonio. That blend still defines the place.
