Historic HBCU College Town
Apartments in Prairie View, TX
Welcome to Prairie View, the Waller County college town on the northwestern edge of the Houston metro, home to Prairie View A&M University — the oldest public HBCU in Texas.
Prairie View is a city in north central Waller County, Texas, on the northwestern edge of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. It sits along U.S. Highway 290 and the Texas and New Orleans Railroad corridor between the towns of Hempstead and Waller, roughly 47 miles northwest of downtown Houston. The community's origins are inseparable from higher education. Its land traces to Alta Vista, the plantation home of Jared E. Kirby, and in 1876 the Texas legislature established the Agricultural and Mechanical College for Colored Youth on the site — making Prairie View the home of the state's second public institution of higher learning and its first for Black students. That institution became Prairie View A&M University, the oldest public HBCU in Texas and one of the largest in the nation, with roughly 9,500 students. The university is a land-grant institution under the Morrill Acts and a member of the Texas A&M University System. The university defines Prairie View's identity and economy, employing many residents and drawing students, faculty, and visitors from across the country. The city has grown into a small but active college town, with a mix of student housing, faculty neighborhoods, and older residential streets. Its population skews young and reflects the university's historic mission, with a predominantly Black community. Prairie View A&M's athletic programs and its acclaimed Marching Storm band are prominent sources of local pride. Prairie View suits students, university employees, and families who want an affordable base within commuting distance of Houston. Public school students attend Waller Independent School District, which serves Prairie View, Waller, and Pine Island, and Blinn College is the designated community college for district residents. U.S. Highway 290 provides a direct route into Houston, while the surrounding Waller County farmland offers a rural contrast to the city's academic core.
