Apartments in Poth, TX
Welcome to Poth, a Wilson County city on U.S. 181, about thirty-five miles southeast of San Antonio and named for the brewer who helped bring the railroad to town.
Poth is a city in Wilson County, Texas, in the rural country southeast of San Antonio. It sits at the junction of U.S. Highway 181 and Farm roads 427 and 541, about seven miles southeast of Floresville, the county seat, and roughly thirty-five miles southeast of downtown San Antonio. The city had a population of 1,819 in the 2020 census and covers about 3.2 square miles. The community began with the railroad. Poth was established in 1886 as a switch on the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway, and it was originally named Marcelina for the railroad's employees. The town was later renamed for A.H. Poth, a San Antonio brewer who donated land for the line, giving the city the distinctive name it carries today. By the early twentieth century the railroad town had developed a lumberyard, cotton gin, bank, and general stores, and it grew gradually through the agricultural economy of south-central Texas. Poth is served by Poth Independent School District, which enrolls students from prekindergarten through twelfth grade and operates one elementary school, one middle school, and Poth High School within the community. The district is a central institution in local life, with school sports and events bringing residents together throughout the year. For residents, Poth offers a quiet, family-oriented small-town setting with strong community ties, a short drive to Floresville for county services, and convenient highway access to San Antonio's employment, healthcare, and cultural amenities. Its identity rests on the railroad, agriculture, and the close-knit character of a south Texas county town, while the nearby highway keeps the wider region within easy reach.
