Pineland is a small city in Sabine County, Texas, set in the rolling pine forests of deep East Texas near the Louisiana line. It traces its origins to the arrival of the timber industry: the Gulf, Beaumont and Great Northern Railway laid tracks through the county in 1902, and a sawmill and lumber camp grew up along the line, first recorded as John Adam's Mill. By 1904 the settlement was called Pineland, and lumbering and timber products have remained its principal industry ever since. The town sits at the edge of the Sabine National Forest, part of the four national forests of East Texas, and within a short drive of Toledo Bend Reservoir, the sprawling impoundment on the Sabine River whose western shores lie largely within the national forest. Toledo Bend's roughly 1,200 miles of shoreline make it a major destination for freshwater fishing, boating, and camping, and the lake's recreation economy complements the timber industry that built the town. Pineland is small and unpretentious, with a population of about 888. Its civic life is modest — a cluster of homes, churches, and local businesses along the farm-to-market roads — with county government, schools, and fuller services provided in Hemphill, the Sabine County seat about ten miles to the west. The Trail Between the Lakes, a 26.8-mile hiking trail established in 1981, runs from Pineland toward Hemphill through the forest and lake country, and Lakeview Campground offers camping and trail access on the reservoir. Public education is provided by Hemphill ISD. Pineland suits residents drawn to the quiet of the Piney Woods, to hunting and fishing, and to a way of life shaped by the forest and the lake, with the larger East Texas towns of Jasper and San Augustine within an hour's drive.
