Moore is a small, unincorporated community and census-designated place in northeastern Frio County, Texas, set along Interstate 35 at Exit 114. Its position on the highway places it about 44 miles southwest of downtown San Antonio and 13 miles northeast of Pearsall, the Frio County seat. The community covers roughly 31 square miles but is home to only about 610 people, giving it a very low population density and a distinctly rural, spread-out character. Moore's origins trace to the early 1880s, when the International-Great Northern Railroad built through Frio County and established depots at roughly fifteen-mile intervals. Moore, along with Pearsall and Dilley, grew outward from a railroad depot and cattle-holding pens, becoming one of the small towns that organized the county's early ranching economy. As the wool market declined and regional agriculture shifted from dry-land farming back toward ranching, the community contracted, and its local school was absorbed into the Pearsall system in 1950. Today Moore remains a quiet crossroads community rather than a bustling town. Its economy and daily life are tied to cattle ranching, farming, and the oil and gas production that has contributed to Frio County over the decades. The Frio River, for which the county is named, runs through the broader region, and the landscape is one of brush country, pastureland, and open skies.
