Camp County Lake Country

Listings in Leesburg, TX

Welcome to Leesburg, the small Camp County community on Highway 11 west of Pittsburg — East Texas lake country between Lake Bob Sandlin and Lake O' the Pines.

Leesburg is an unincorporated community in Camp County, Texas, in the Piney Woods of northeast Texas. It lies along State Highway 11, about seven miles west of Pittsburg, the county seat, and is best understood as a small rural crossroads community rather than a town. The community's origins trace to the late 1870s, when the East Line and Red River Railroad built through Camp County and Leesburg became a station on the line. It grew modestly in the following years; by 1884 it had a mill, a gin, and three stores, with a population of about fifty. Leesburg also played an early role in county politics: when Camp County was organized in 1874, Leesburg finished second to Pittsburg in the vote to choose the county seat, a near-miss that shaped its long-term status as a satellite of its larger neighbor. Leesburg has remained small. Its population has held near 115 people since the late twentieth century, and its own school district was consolidated with the Pittsburg Independent School District in 1955. The community retained a post office and a handful of businesses for decades, reflecting its continued role as a local service point for the surrounding countryside. Today Leesburg's identity is tied to its lake-country setting. It sits between Lake Bob Sandlin, a roughly 9,000-acre reservoir to the north, and Lake O' the Pines to the east, with Lake Bob Sandlin State Park a short drive away. This location makes Leesburg a quiet base for fishing, boating, and rural living, within easy reach of Pittsburg's schools, shops, and services — a small community defined more by its landscape than by its built-up center.

City Guide

About Leesburg

Real Estate & Housing

Housing in Leesburg is rural and dispersed rather than subdivision-based. The area consists of single-family homes on acreage, older farmhouses, and manufactured homes set along State Highway 11 and the surrounding county roads. Many properties offer large lots, wooded tracts, and, in some cases, lake proximity or water access given the community's position between two major reservoirs. There is no large-scale tract development, and the market is modest and quiet. Buyers are generally drawn by land, seclusion, and lake-country access rather than by the amenities of a conventional town, making Leesburg appealing for country living at an attainable price.

Neighborhoods

Leesburg has no formal neighborhoods or subdivisions; it is a scattered rural community strung along State Highway 11 and the county roads that branch from it. Homes sit on individual tracts rather than in platted blocks, with the old railroad alignment and the highway providing the community's loose geographic spine. Some residents cluster near the lake shores of Lake Bob Sandlin and Lake O' the Pines, while others live on inland wooded acreage. This dispersed pattern means neighbors are often separated by fields and trees, giving the community a distinctly open, country feel while keeping Pittsburg's services just minutes away.

Lifestyle in Leesburg

Leesburg's lifestyle is quiet and rural, defined by its East Texas lake-country setting rather than any downtown core. Life here centers on the surrounding countryside, local fishing spots, and the easy pace of an unincorporated community, with residents valuing privacy, space, and neighborly familiarity. For groceries, schools, healthcare, and services, Pittsburg is only about seven miles east. Weekend recreation revolves around Lake Bob Sandlin and Lake O' the Pines, with boating, fishing, and camping as everyday pastimes. It suits retirees, lake-oriented households, and anyone seeking a peaceful rural base in the Piney Woods of northeast Texas.

Schools & Education

Leesburg is served by the Pittsburg Independent School District, based in the county seat about seven miles east. The community's own school district consolidated with Pittsburg ISD in 1955, and students have attended Pittsburg schools since then. The district serves most of Camp County and offers elementary, intermediate, junior high, and high school campuses in Pittsburg. This consolidation gives Leesburg families access to a full, established school system within a short drive. For higher education, Northeast Texas Community College in Mount Pleasant and the region's universities are within commuting range.

Getting Around

Leesburg sits along State Highway 11, which runs east into Pittsburg and west toward Sulphur Springs, providing the community's primary road link. The Louisiana and Arkansas Railway line passes through the area, a reminder of the rail connection that first gave rise to the community in the 1870s, though freight rather than passenger service operates today. Mount Pleasant, with its larger retail and Interstate 30 access, lies about 15 to 20 miles north via U.S. 271. The community is car-dependent, and the nearest commercial airports are in Tyler and Longview, each roughly an hour away.

Parks & Recreation

Leesburg's recreation centers on the two reservoirs that frame the community. Lake Bob Sandlin, immediately to the north, is a roughly 9,000-acre lake with a state park offering camping, a fishing pier, boat ramps, and swimming, while Lake O' the Pines to the east provides additional boating and fishing waters across its 29 square miles. Both lakes are known for bass, crappie, and catfish, drawing anglers from across northeast Texas. The surrounding Piney Woods add hunting and hiking opportunities, and the rural county roads invite quiet drives and cycling. It is a community built around access to the outdoors.
