Kirby is a city in Bexar County, Texas, and a complete enclave of San Antonio—surrounded on all sides by the larger city and part of the San Antonio metropolitan area. With a population of about 8,100 in under two square miles, it is one of the region's denser, more compact municipalities, defined by established neighborhoods and convenient access to the Alamo City. The community began as an agricultural settlement along the Southern Pacific Railroad and later incorporated as a city, but today it functions primarily as a residential suburb embedded within San Antonio's east side. Its neighborhoods—including Kirby Manor, Old Town, Kirby Terrace, and the Springfield Manor area known for its astronaut-named streets—hold a mix of older and mid-century single-family homes on a tight street grid, reflecting decades of steady, built-out development.
