The town's name reflects its rural roots: it was adopted from the nickname "Fate," used for a local resident, George Washington Lafayette Peyton, when the community opened its post office in 1880. Everything about Fate changed in the 21st century. Positioned along State Highway 66 and close to Interstate 30, the city became a natural target for residential growth as the Dallas area pushed eastward. By the 2020 census, Fate's population had climbed to nearly 18,000, an increase of almost 30-fold in two decades, making it one of the fastest-growing municipalities in the region. That growth arrived almost entirely in the form of master-planned communities — large, amenity-rich neighborhoods such as Woodcreek, Monterra, and Edgewater — built around pools, trails, parks, and new schools.
