Clear Lake Shores is a small island city in Galveston County, Texas, on Clear Lake within the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area. The city occupies a waterfront community built around a network of canals and marinas, with Clear Lake opening into Galveston Bay just to the east. Its location places it roughly 25 miles southeast of downtown Houston and a similar distance northwest of Galveston. The community grew after World War II, as water facilities and permanent residences replaced earlier seasonal and fishing-camp development. Clear Lake Shores incorporated in 1962, and its population has remained small — around 1,200 residents — while the surrounding Clear Lake and Bay Area has grown into a major residential and employment center. Clear Lake Shores is best known as a boating destination. The city carries the title "Yachting Capital of Texas," and the broader Clear Lake area holds one of the largest concentrations of recreational boats in the United States.
